And I’ll say it again now, after going through another one for the past 3.5 hours... MIGRAINES SUCK BULL TESTICLES!!!
I need to find a solution, mitigation, fixer, anything for my random migraine attacks. I had to miss a study session and my classes today, the pain was too much for me to get out of bed and do normal activity. ;_;
I know there are a couple migraine sufferers on here, what do you all do?

Have you tried LSD or shrooms? Serious question not joking here. there has been lots of research showing that ingesting either during extreme migraines can actually force your brains to reroute transmissions to other receptors and form new path ways which can reduce the over all effect and frequency of migraines over time.... or something like that, I’m no brain surgeon but you should look into it.

never had a migraine and at one point, I f’ing lived in my car for 4 days. If I had to guess for a temporary cure, go ride go-karts! Also, video games, ice-cream, bake a mean ass dessert, pronz, car wash, or call a friend. I’m free after 6 pm CST :]

If someone really had a migraine they would most likely not b able to do any of those things except maybe eat ice cream.

Stay hydrated! A lot of normal headaches and migraines happen if you aren’t drinking enough water. I’ve noticed if I slack on my water drinking, that’s when I get them.
Now, once I already have a migraine, I've found the only thing that gets rid of them is Excedrin Migraine and sleep. Trying to power through one just makes me nauseous.

When I get them, I can’t do anything. The pain is insane and I get really nauseous as well so I can’t eat/drink anything unless I want to vomit.
Others have told me to masturbate when you get a migraine due to bloodflow + releasing of endorphins but honestly I can’t even do that when I get them.

I normally use Imitrex at the onset and Motrin for the pain. I can’t sleep through them so my only option is to power through them until the pain is low enough for me to do stuff.
Hydration may be one of my problems then. I haven’t had much of anything to drink today now that I think of it. I’ve had two other migraines in the past month, I wonder if those were caused by lack of hydration.

As awkward as that sounds, given what I’ve read about migraines and blood flow, that kinda makes sense....I can’t even drink water or I get horribly nauseous. Which is why I’m starving after every migraine and eat a crapton.

Requires a prescription but it’s not controlled or anything so they usually have no reservations if you mention having migraines. Mine are tension related and after letting one dissolve under my tongue I lay, head back, on the couch for 30 minutes and I’m good. If it’s a bad one, I’ll lay in bed with a wet washcloth wrapped around the back of me head, ear level. That by itself offers some relief, especially under my ears.

Step one: coffee
Step two: one Excedrin migraine
Step three: second Excedrin, find dark room.

If I could get over a migraine in 30 minutes, life would be soo much easier!! I’ll have to talk to my doctor about it. I still don’t know what causes my migraines after more than 10 years.

I don’t get them, but my wife does. I can only imagine how much it hurts. I feel so bad watching her suffer. She went to the doctor and was perscribed Effexor for it and it has helped a lot.

Get some caffeine in your system as soon as you notice symptoms. It speeds up the process getting you to a point where you can function a lot faster. Especially helpful if you get the visual symptoms where you lose sight out of half of each eye.

Caffeine and a max dose of ibuprofen as soon as you are aware you’re having symptoms. Mine usually start with an aura, and if I can ibuprofen and caffeine in me as fast as possible it gets me back to functional much quicker than if I’m not able to. I generally go with Mountain Dew as it has a decent amount of caffeine and I can drink it much quicker than coffee. Coffee is a good follow up, but since it is hot I can't get enough caffeine quickly enough to help as much.

Imitrex has done absolutely nothing for me in the past so if you’re in the same boat definitely talk to you doctor. There are other options like Maxalt (same class of drug but still could work for you) or even Fioricet.

I'm going to suggest you go back to the start (once you can think again) and try to figure out what your migraine trigger is. Google will help you with common causes, but identifying your trigger will help you a) prevent, b) prepare for, or c) recover quickly from migraines.
Mine is atmospheric pressure changes. Doesn't matter if its a fast approaching storm (low pressure) or an incoming warm breeze (high pressure). As the pressure starts to change, I can start to feel the pre-migraine tension in my sinuses. If I recognize the trigger in time, I can medicate and not suffer. If I know a pressure change is coming, I can medicate and not suffer, even if I don't feel the pre-migraine trigger. Much better than trying to stop an already charging bull migraine.
I tried asprin and ibuprofin without any benefit. Then I went prescription with Relpax, which was 100% effective in preventing a migraine for 24hrs if taken in advance, but was significantly less effective in stopping an already developing migraine. After ~4yrs of 1 to 2 Relpax a month, they became increasingly less effective and increasingly nausea inducing, even if taken with a full meal. I moved to Imatrex which was better at reducing an in-progress migraine, but not so effective as a preventative and still nausea inducing. For the last 3 years, I found Excedrin migraine (or generic equivalent) as the best over the counter combination preventative and restorative migraine treatment... FOR ME. Downsides are: a) contains caffeine, so may make it difficult to sleep, b) contains acetaminophen, so time your dosages carefully, c) only lasts for ~4 hrs per pill. Upsides are: a) inexpensive, b) can be taken repeatedly in the course of a day c) can be taken when I think a migraine might be coming d) can be taken when I'm in a full-blown migraine attack and can't eat. I guess I take about 15-20 pills per month.
Back to the beginning. See if you can identify your migraine trigger(s). Stress? Dehydration? Artificial sweeteners? Caffeine deficiency? Atmospheric pressure swings? Electromagnetic waves? Eye strain? Allergies? Phases of the moon? Once you have a theory, figure out how to test it, modify it, avoid it and fix it. This is Oppo 101: just treat your brain like it's an 1992 Volvo with a funny rattle when making left turns on rainy Tuesdays. Start with your best guess and easiest fix and give it a go.
For homeopathic migraine relief, I have also had some success with spicy Mexican food, alternating hot and c0ld head wraps or showers and airplane trips. The last one may only work if you trigger is the same as mine, as an airplane ride is essentially a controlled depressurization / repressurization cycle. Good luck and get well. Keep Oppo posted if you make progress or even if you just get frustrated. Someone will be here to help as long as Kinja allows.

I started using Imitrex in middle school, and it worked pretty good then, not so much anymore. I’ve heard the name Fioricet before, I’ll need to do more research.

It varies from person to person, usually they do but its not unheard of for them to become less effective for people over time, especially when you look at the pathophysiology of migraines and headaches. Also, Ill admit that while I’m not quite a pharmacist yet I will be Trunk Impaired 318 Doctor of Pharmacy next year.

MUST BE IN THIS ORDER
1. Ass load of water
2. Excedrin (or 5)
3. Sleep if possible
4. More excedrin.

Supposedly it’s pretty straightforward to get a medical marijuana license in MI if you decide to go that route. I know a couple of people who have gotten theirs for chronic pain issues; they said it was pretty easy.

It's science. Excedrin Headache or whatever it's called is actually a combo of ibuprofen and caffeine in convenient pill form.

There is strong evidence that coffee has some very positive health effects. Parkinson’s and other similar diseases seem to be much less common in coffe drinkers. Plus straight coffee without sweeteners or creamers has no calories. The Wikipedia article on caffeine is quite interesting.

I used to get horrendous migraines. Couldn’t see well out of my right eye, throwing up, head pounding and wanting to die. My parents tried all kinds of stuff and finally talked to my friend’s dad who is a doctor. He suggested protein. Simple as that.
I used to eat cereal and crap for breakfast when I was younger. My parents started making high protein breakfasts for me and that solved the problem! I now start every single morning with a pork chop, two eggs, toast, and lots of water. I haven’t had a migraine in 10+ years. Add some protein to your diet. It’s a cheap and easy way to see if that may keep them at bay!
